Low morale of police force
8/14/2006

It is needless to say that the police can serve the people in various ways. They are the proud sons of the country but they are themselves arrogant in serving the people after getting the job in this department.
The police personnel have otherwise great responsibilities to the country in order to make the government's plan a success in respect of enforcement law. We respect them very much as we know, without law enforcing agency, we can not live happily. Our question is:
Do the police really uphold the values that they are expected to honour?
Do all the police personnel bother about keeping their pledge?
An incident occurred in front of me is being narrated below:
When I was coming to my Office at 3, CDA, Agrabad, Chittagong, by a bus, a policeman suddenly stopped our bus by driving his two-wheeler scooter and placing the same before the bus. He got into the bus and caught the collar of the driver's shirt and dragged him out from his driving seat to the ground, slapping and kicking him like a football.
All passengers kept silent. The policeman scolded the bus driver in the filthiest languages. Listening to such kinds of words, can make anybody excited to beat the concerned policeman. After few minutes, we saw that the driver offered him (the policeman) a 100 taka note.
The police declined to take the note and continued to beat the driver. After a while, we again saw that the driver handed over a Tk 500 note to the policeman who later left the place. After asking the driver, we came to know that the driver took a passenger from a place which was distant from the normal point of stoppage.
It was a good effort made by the police man. But it seemed to us that the action was taken by him only for getting the money. The money changed the work spirit of the police man.
I heard a person saying that if the police man has no money in his pocket, he catches hold of any driver for any minor fault and then fills his pocket.
I earnestly request the authorities concerned to ponder over this matter very seriously. Serious efforts are needed to improve the moral of the police personnel. Otherwise, we will suffer a lot in the future.
