10 die in Jessore
Cold waves likely to sweep country from next week
1/3/2005

A couple of moderate-to-sev-ere cold waves are likely to sweep country's northern and central regions from middle of the next week, breaking the current respite, report agencies.
Night temperature may fall with the mercury shuttling between eight and four degrees Celsius during the cold spell, forecast Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its long-term bulletin Sunday.
"Another two mild-to-moderate cold waves may occur elsewhere in the country, with an intensity of 6-10 degrees Celsius," it said.
In the second week of current month, density of fog is likely to increase, the Met office forecast said.
The forecast noted that rainfall in January is likely to be less than normal against the background of 88 per cent less than normal rainfall in December. Also there had been less than expected cold during December because the western jet air stayed higher above 18 thousand feet in the space. Besides, the subcontinental high pressure ridge remained weak resulting in less than expected cold weather in Bangladesh in December.
Meanwhile in Jessore, the cold wave now sweeping the country claimed two more lives in the town here Friday.
With this, 10 people died of the cold related diseases in last five days here until Sunday.
