15110 hectares to go under wheat cultivation in S'Ganj
Our Correspondent
1/6/2006

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 4: The Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) has set a target to cultivate wheat on 15110 hectares of land in the district this season under an intensive 'rabi' crop production programme.
On the other hand, a production target has been fixed at 30982 tonnes, according to a source in the DAE.
The DAE will set up 395 demonstration plots in the district to acquaint the farmers with the modern methods of wheat cultivation.
Moreover, arrangements have been made to supply quality seeds, fertilisers and other agri inputs to farmers at fair prices to make the programme a success, sources said.
Another report adds: Cultivation of brinjal is gaining ground day by day in the district.
According to sources in the DAE, a total of 911 acres of a land were brought under brinjal cultivation in the district in 2004, and 915 acres in 2005.
While talking to Shukur Ali (50), a farmer of village Kalidash Ganti in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila, who has been cultivating brinjal for more than 10 years continuously, this correspondent came to know that he might earn at least Tk 21000/- by cultivating brinjal on one 'bigha' of land.
A good number of brinjal farmers in all the nine upazilas of the district told the FE that brinjal cultivation was very profitable.
