JERUSALEM, Jan 5 (AFP): Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was fighting for his life Thursday after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage, throwing the country into turmoil barely three months before a general election likely to determine the future of Middle East peacemaking. The 77-year-old Sharon, dubbed "the Bulldozer," underwent seven hours of surgery before doctors were able to halt bleeding in his brain but he remained in a critical condition. Doctors called a halt to an initial bout of surgery after six hours, but he had to be readmitted to the operating theatre for another hour when complications arose. "Prime Minister Sharon is in a severe condition (but) he is stable," Shlomo Moryussef, director of Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital, told reporters.
