BENAPOLE, Jan 7: The indefinite strike at the Benapole port, which crippled export-import activities through the landport last week, was called off today after fruitful discussions with all concerned. The five port-user organisations have withdrawn the programme after their demands were accepted at a meeting at the Jessore circuit house. Representatives of the Shipping Ministry, the port authorities and the port users attended the meeting. Forest and Environment Minister M Tariqul Islam, also the minister-in-charge of Jessore district, was present in the meeting. The government incurred a loss of revenue income to the tune of Tk 350 million (35 crore) during the week-long strike. Thousands of empty trucks started thronging in front of the port soon after withdrawal of the strike. Concerned sources said the customs authorities would extend the time for entry of Indian imported goods at the landport. — UNB
