DU students preparing for fighting in the job market
Md. Kamruzzaman
1/8/2005

Students of Dhaka University (DU) are now paying more attention to a acquiring extra curricular knowledge than studying text books, according to sources.
The students of the country's premier seat of higher education are doing this in response to the demand of the present job market.
Mainly the students of the Arts Faculty are giving the major part of their concentration of acquiring extra curricular knowledge in comparison to their counterparts in Science and Commerce faculties.
The students of the Science Faculty are also rushing for extra curricular knowledge like general knowledge, computer knowledge, IELTS, TOEFL and the like.
Only the students of the Commerce Faculty are pursuing their academic courses more attentively considering the possibility of managing honourable jobs after completion of their graduation.
According to sources, since the last 10 years the Arts students have been studying extra academic subjects more seriously to make themselves fit for competing in the job market.
Many of them are taking preparations for fighting in the country's most competitive Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations for jobs in different cadre posts of the government.
Random roaming at different student dormitories of the university by this correspondent has revealed that only the Commerce students return to their halls before 6:00pm and study until mid-night.
Furthermore, the Commerce students attend their classes regularly while their Arts counterparts except a few ones who have examinations near are hardly found at their dormitories before 8:00pm.
It has been observed that most of the Arts students are in doubt whether they would be able to manage job after showing mere academic certificates.
They spend most of their academic years in reading newspapers, learning computer from city's different computer training centres, doing IELTS or TOEFL and only a few months before their examinations they study text books.
It has also been observed that the tendency of reading English newspapers is gradually increasing among the Arts students.
Meanwhile, the Science students are gradually becoming nervous about their future career observing the scenario of the job market dominated by persons with Commerce background.
They, like the Arts students, are trying to improve their job-oriented knowledge and establish links with different national and multi-national companies during their student life.
It has also been found that in the city's bachelor hostels the number of unemployed youths with DU Science background is increasing like the ones with Arts-background.
"I like to ensure a way of job before completion of my Masters degree", said Mizanur Rahman, a fourth year student of Applied Chemistry.
Rokonuzzaman Lablu, a third year student of Persian Literature of Dhaka University, said, "I have already learnt Graphics Design in computer and have worked with some companies".
He expressed the hope that he would be able to do something at least with his knowledge in Graphics Design.
Mahmuddunnabi, a fourth year student of English Department, viewed that with a certificate of English Literature he could expect to manage a job in a non-government college as a lecturer.
"But to do something more I need to learn something more and realising the fact I am practising writing in an English daily and have learnt computer operating and Internet browsing", he added.
