Relief goods worth Tk 30m distributed in Rangpur

          RANGPUR, Nov 18 (BSS): The government has completed distribution of relief goods in different forms worth about Tk 300 million (30 crore) among more than 5.66 lakh poor and destitute families of the district during the past two and half months since September last.
Besides, all formalities have been completed to begin post- flood rehabilitation and renovation programmes at the cost of about Tk 90.0 million in eight upazilas of the district.
The programmes will be undertaken to create more job facilities for the people of Rangpur district, although the Monga situation is now over with the start of T-Aman harvest in the region, concerned officials said.
Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur M Nazrul Islam Khan told the news agency the government had distributed adequate amount of food grains and cash money on time among the poor people to curb the Monga situation, the annual phenomenon in the region.
As a result, he said, the situation became quite normal in the whole area with the disappearance of Monga or 'famine' from the region.
As much as 5,275 tonnes of rice worth Tk 71.2 million were distributed among 2,56,500 families under the VGF, 701 tonnes of rice worth Tk 9.46 among 70,100 families under the General Relief, Tk 0.25 million in cash among 400 families and Tk 25.0 million among 2,500 families under the Risk Reduction Programmes were so far distributed in the district.
In addition, the Deputy Commissioner said, 929 tonnes of rice worth Tk 12.5 million at the rate of Tk 4.00 per kg were sold among 77,400 families from September until now.
During the period, Social Welfare Department distributed Tk 54.3 million among 1,25,118 families in the form of Old Age and Freedom Fighters' allowances, Women Affairs Department distributed Tk 82.1 million among 26,691 families in the form of Widow allowances, VGD food programme and other forms.
