All-time high record sale of handloom saris in Pabna
11/2/2005

PABNA, Nov 1 (BDNEWS): The handloom traders of greater Pabna region are in a festive mood as they have already sold saris worth over Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore), a record for the past 20 years, said sources.
Meanwhile, around 1.0 million (10 lakh) pieces of saris are being sold at 20 cloth markets of Pabna and Sirajganj on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The markets include Jalalpur, Dogachi, Santhia, Dhulauri and Kashinathpur of Pabna and Shahjadpur, Belkuchi, Shohagpur, Ullapara and Gopalpur of Sirajganj.
Everyday all the markets are getting packed with sellers and buyers, as various types of local sarees, like - boutique, chandan boutique, katan, half-silk etc are of great demand this season.
Earlier, the retailers from the capital as well as other towns rushed into the markets of the region to procure their required sarees and thus fulfill the customers' demands. Thus, after a long time the handloom traders are able to achieve profit by selling their products.
Sources said people's taste has been changing and they are now buying local sarees more than before, the benefit of which goes to the local producers. "It's very good impact for the local handloom producers and traders," they added.
