At least 18 people, including a customs inspector and a former footballer, were killed and 33 others injured in separate road accidents across the country during Eid vacation, reports BDNEWS. Of them, seven people were killed in Jhalakathi while five in Chittagong and two each in Dhaka, Comilla and Brahmanbaria districts. In Jhalakathi, at least five people were killed and another was injured in a road accident at Boroitala on the Jhalakathi-Barisal highway in the district Saturday morning. Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when a Bhandaria-bound bus of Suravi Paribahan collided head-on with a Barisal-bound tempo at Boroitala on the Jhalakathi-Barisal highway leaving the driver and four passengers of the tempo dead on the spot. The deceased were identified as Hasina Begum (36), Nazma (16), Selim Kabiraj, Abdur Rahman Akand (38) and tempo driver Shamim (27). A pedestrian was also injured in the incident and admitted to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. In another accident, two more people were killed in Jhalakathi while seven others injured Thursday. The dead were identified as Aparna (6) and Gouranga (25). Police and witnesses said a Barisal-bound microbus from Jhalakathi rammed into a tree at Shatpakhia area in the district at 10am leaving Aparna and her uncle Gouranga dead on the spot. In Chittagong, three people, including a customs inspector, were killed and two others injured in two separate road accidents in the district on the Eid day Friday. Customs Inspector (VAT) of the district Rafiqul Islam (45) was killed when a microbus carrying him collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound passenger bus at Chhutokumira under Sitakunda thana. Monir Hossain (25), the driver of the microbus, was also killed on the spot. The customs inspector was going to Feni from Chittagong by the microbus to celebrate Eid festival. In the second accident, one Nizamuddin (22) was killed, and a driver and another passenger of a CNG-run auto rickshaw were critically injured when a Chittagong-bound passenger bus hit their auto rickshaw at Jangalkhain under Patiya Upazila. In another incident, two people, including an aged woman, were killed and another woman wounded critically in an accident at a merry go round at city's Foy's Lake Saturday afternoon. The dead were identified as Mohammad Azad (45), a range officer of Sylhet forest department and his friend's elder sister Sufia Khatun (59). His wife Aziza Azad Muni was wounded critically in the accident. Police and eyewitnesses said the trio met the tragic accident at around 4:35pm when they were riding in a merry go round, locally known as Nagardola, during their holiday bustling. The abrupt accident in the picturesque Foy's Lake cast a pall of gloom and hundreds of tourists who flocked the spot during the Eid festival cut short their stay and left. In Brahmanbaria, two people were killed and three others injured when a Brahmanbaria-bound passenger bus from Sylhet and a Chandura-bound three-wheeler from Brahmanbaria collided head-on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Oliur Rahman (35) and Fazlul Haq (50) while the injured were Akhter (15), Rashid (30) and Kawser (22). In Comilla, two people were killed and 17 others injured when a passenger bus hit a covered van at Kutumbapur of Chandina in the district on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The dead are Abul Kashem (35) and Rasheda Begum (35). Abul Kashem died on the spot while Rasheda on way to the Comilla Hospital. Of the injured, four were admitted to the Comilla Sadar Hospital in a critical condition while the others released after giving first aid. The police seized both the covered van and the passenger bus. In the capital, a former footballer was killed in a road mishap at the city's Banani area in Gulshan thana Friday. The deceased, identified as Mosharraf Hossain, was a nephew of Awami League presidium member Tofail Ahmed. The accident took place in the afternoon when a jeep hit the motorbike of the footballer who was travelling along with a friend. The speeding jeep also hit another car and injured two other people. The police seized the killer Prado Jeep (Dhaka Metro Gha-11-5930), another victim car (Dhaka Metro-Ga-13-1470) and the motorcycle. The jeep was owned by businessman Mohammad Shahjahan of Narayanganj and a resident of Eskaton area in the city. During the accident, the jeep was driven by his son Omi, who is allegedly a drug addict.
