12/26/2005

ZHENGZHOU, DEC 25 (CEIS): Total cotton output in China is expected to reach 5.45 million tons this year, 0.87 million tonnes less than last year or down 13.8% year-on-year, according to the information from Zhengzhou Grain Wholesale Market in central China's Henan Province.
Due to rapid growth in textile industry, it expects that the country's total demand for cotton will be 9.4 million tonnes this year, 0.8 million tonnes more than last year or up 10 per cent year-on-year, leaving a gap between supply and demand.
The survey by China Cotton Association shows that affected by continuous raining during the harvesting period in some cotton- growing areas, per unit cotton output this year drops slightly compared with last year and the country's total cotton output is expected to be 5.45 million tonnes.
Statistics by the association indicate that by Oct 31, 2005, the supply and marketing cooperatives in the country purchased 1.345 million tonnes of ginned cotton, up 11.6 per cent year-on-year, and the cotton purchase in society as a whole reached 2.56 million tonnes, about 47 per cent of the expected total output.
It is reported that cotton purchasing prices are strong and the price for standard unginned cotton is around 5.8 yuan per kilogram, up 32 per cent than a year earlier.
