THE government of Bangladesh has taken different types of programmes to ensure the maintenance of sanitary latrines at every house within the year 2010. But no programme has been taken to keep the existing latrines neat and clean and to increase the number of public toilets. Every user knows about the miserable condition of the latrines, which are situated at hat-bazaars, schools, colleges and offices along with other crowed places. There are so many incidents of contracting infectious diseases through using these dirty latrines in hospitals. The women of our country have to be in troublesome positions while moving on the roads. In a word, there are very few persons who are not in troublesome position at the time of using toilets. In this respect, reports have come up in the newspapers at different time. In foreign countries buses have attached latrines but there is no such system in our buses. In our country, there are latrines with openings (without water seal and safety tank) in our railway compartments. Most of the urinals of our country are built with low walls and they are also made without roofs and doors. For that reason these latrines are not used by women. It is our bounden duty to find out ways and means to change the outlook. According to many researchers, it is possible to effect a positive change in the people's mind regarding the use of toilet. With this end in view, preparations for arranging a seminar is going to be held in Dhaka. So I would like to tell the people who are interested to write on sanitation as well as the organisations involved with sanitation work to advise directly through the newspapers in this respect.
