Buses for women
12/26/2005

WE came to know from different media reports that the government has introduced BRTC buses, especially for women and planned to increase their number on various routes. But practically, we do not see such buses on the streets.
Many women, nowadays, use bus to go to their workplaces. But everyday they face harassment and difficulties while getting into these buses. Irrespective of arrangements about the busses having ticket system or not, they never give any importance to women as their valuable passengers. There is no hard and fast rule in the non-ticket buses, but those that have ticket system also do not have basic rules on the passenger services. No passenger maintains any line and queue nowadays, or no supervision is done by the bus owners to maintain their standard. In most of the cases, all the buses come at a time at a stoppage creating a chaotic situation and this is not at all women-friendly.
In the present situation, it would not be wise to demand reserved seats for women or increase the number of buses only for women. But discipline in bus service can make the situation friendly for women.
