Garment workers demand Tk 0.5m for each victim of KTS carnage
FE Report
2/26/2006

National Garments Workers Federation (NGWF) demanded Tk 500,000 as compensation for each person killed at the fire-accident in the KTS Textile and Garments in Chittagong and Tk 50,000 each for treatment of the injured workers.
The leaders of NGWF brought out a mourning procession carrying black flags in the city Saturday in protest of the killing of 84 garment workers.
Addressing the mourning rally NGWF president Shahida Sarker said, "The absence of alternative evacuation route and fire-proof clothes coupled with padlocked main gate during working hours has caused the massive human loss during the fire."
The federation members demanded safety in the workplace and exemplary punishment to those responsible for torturing eight workers who died a tragic death.
Among others, federation general secretary Amirul Huq, central leader Nurun Nahar, Faruq Khan, Shafiqul Islam and Arifa Akter, also addressed the rally.
