Scene 1: Shoeb is a student of class ten at Shibganj Pilot High School, Borga. He took up science for his SSC. He does not know the prospect of studying science. What he knows is simply that he can become a doctor or an engineer or a good science subject teacher at a college or a university or can become a BCS cadre. Teachers seldom speak of students' future career-what they can be for studying what. Even teachers are not that much conscious about the job market. They are not properly updated. Scene 2: Arafat is a student of class ten at Government Laboratory High School, Dhaka. Though teachers seldom speak about their future career, he has a very good idea about what job he is going to do once he completes his graduation. He has relatives in different multinationals and also in government level. He has the opportunity of learning from them about prospect of studying science, commerce or arts. He can see his future better for living in the capital city. It seems studies have become more career-oriented these days. Students want to know the benefits of what they are studying. With the help of information technology, specially the sources like newspapers and different television channels have helped them become much more conscious about what is going to be their career. Still, all these sources are informal and they need to be more conscious because we want a better output from our student community. There are few schools in Bangladesh that make arrangement for the students so that they can visit different corporate organisations. In Japan, even students of primary schools regularly visit different industries to get a clear idea about what their job life is going to be like and how they can prepare themselves. If we could make such arrangements for our kids, they could be much more motivated and could have a better plan about their future. If corporate organisations can make presentations and can hold questions and answer sessions in different schools and colleges, students will really be benefited. They will have a better idea about the benefit of studying different subjects. For examples, if a cell phone company makes presentations describing different wings, students will be able to know about engineering department, marketing, finance etc. Based on the knowledge of different wings, they can prepare themselves accordingly. The ex-students can play a great role about informing the students of the job market they are going to be in. Their words, talks will help them to a great extent to have a better idea about the challenges of the working life ahead of them. What is the need of such works by the institutes? This will be actually a source of motivation for our students. While studying and finishing course after course, students may lose their track, they may be unsure about where they are going to. They sometimes might think what comes next. If they have a clear picture of what is going to happen next, they obviously may feel the pressure of studying better so that they are able to manage a good job. Better knowledge about the job market will help students realise why they should be more computer literate, why they need to develop their English and communication skills. If corporate organisations can spend time and money the students of different institutions, ultimately they will be the gainers.
