AL withdraws today's hartal
FE Report
7/24/2004

Opposition Awami League (AL) has withdrawn its today's (Saturday) countrywide day-long hartal considering public sufferings due to flood.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the central working committee, held at the party Dhanmondi office Friday with senior AL leader Abdus Samad Azad in the chair.
Different socio-political and trade organisations requested the opposition party to withdraw the hartal programme due to current flood.
After the meeting AL general secretary Abdul Jalil told reporters that hartal was withdrawn in the wake of current flooding and public sufferings.
AL announced the day-long shutdown in protest against the custodial death of Gazipur Jubo League leader Suman Ahmed Majumder who was the main witness to the Ahsanullah Master killing case. He was arrested by members of RAB July 17 last and allegedly tortured to death.
"We have taken into consideration the problems and sufferings of the people as the flood has hit 43 districts and 20 million people of the country," Jalil said.
