Barge with clinker capsizes at Mongla channel
7/24/2004

KHULNA, July 23: A barge loaded with 360 tonnes of clinker worth about Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh) capsized in the Pashor river's Mongla channel Thursday. Four members of the staff of the barge were injured, of whom Shahidul Islam (25) was admitted to the Mongla Thana Health Complex in a critical condition. Sources said the barge named Parvine was carrying 360 tonnes of clinker from a foreign ship, Asian Prime, that was staying at the Harbaria point of Mongla port, for the Holcim Cement Factory at Mongla. When the barge reached the Mongla channel at noon Thursday, it suddenly sunk in the channel after its bottom cracked. — Our Correspondent
