AL men urged to make people aware about govt conspiracy
8/3/2006

Leaders and workers of the Awami League (AL) have been urged to make the people aware about the conspiracy of the present government and resist all kinds of anti-democratic activities.
Leader of the Opposition and AL President Sheikh Hasina made the appeal while exchanging views with presidents and secretaries of the party units of Khulna district and city, reports UNB.
Sheikh Hasina accused the government of tarnishing the country's image abroad by branding it "most corrupt" in the world.
"People are not corrupt. It's the BNP-Jamaat ministers and lawmakers who are corrupt and the nation has been branded as the most corrupt due to their limitless corruption. They're looting public money and politicising every sector by appointing party cadres to various departments, including the administration," the AL chief alleged.
The Leader of the Opposition also alleged that a number of government-patronised people had made their fortunes pocketing Tk 200 million (20 crore) in the name of appointing 1800 employees to the Food Department.
Sheikh Hasina was highly critical of the government for borrowing Tk 62 billion from banks in the name of development works and alleged that the government had siphoned off the money to inflate the bank balances of its own people.
"The frequent price hike of daily essentials indicates that it has been done in a planned way. The BNP-Jamaat ministers and lawmakers have formed a syndicate to loot public money. And at the fag end of their term, they have become desperate to make more and more money to buy votes," the AL president said.
About militancy, Hasina said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman had paved the way for creating militancy in the country and now his wife Khaleda Zia as the home minister has kept the militant kingpins in a sub-jail in total comfort.
"How can the government keep the convicted Bangla Bhai and Shaekh Rahman in a sub-jail when they are supposed to be kept in the condemned cell? The government is doing this as it has been the patron of militants," Hasina mentioned.
