Sylhet constituencies
Pledges by alliance MPs still remain unfulfilled
10/14/2005

SYLHET, Oct 13 (BDNEWS) : Most of the electoral pledges made by the ruling BNP-led four-party alliance lawmakers of the Sylhet constituencies remained unfulfilled in the past four years.
Sources said the members of parliament (MPs) of the Sylhet constituencies made five distinct promises for development of the district, the home of Finance and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman, in the election manifesto.
The promises included establishment of a Computer Institution, building a bridge in Chhatak over the river Surma, replacement of the screen-bridge with a new four-lane bridge over the river Surma, establishment of a separate stadium and upgradation of the Dhaka-Sylhet rail road.
Other than modernisation of the Dhaka-Sylhet railway to some extent, all the promises remained unfulfilled even after completion of four years by the alliance government.
Local people alleged that the ruling party had slowed down different projects, including expansion and modernisation of the runway of the Sylhet Osmani International Airport, initiated during the previous Awami League regime.
Sources said ensuring the voting rights of expatriates from Sylhet was another key electoral pledge that also remained unaccomplished.
The implementation process of 800 projects for Sylhet, included in the priority list of the Prime Minister's Office, has also slowed down.
Local people also alleged embezzlement of money allocated for the projects by the party leaders.
When asked, Dildar Hossain Selim, a member of parliament from Sylhet-4 constituency, said his constituency has been experiencing different types of development. Out of 40 kilometres of electric line, 20 kilometres have already been completed.
