Bombs thrown at judges
10/23/2005

It is really a matter of concern for peace loving people that despite the drive by law enforcers, the terrorists have continued their attack on courts and lawyers. Last week a judge was made a victim of terrorism in Sylhet. Biplob Goswami, the Divisional speedy Trial Tribunal Judge, was hit by bomb in front of his official residence when he was returning from the court. Fortunately no fatal injury was caused to the judge.
The incident proves that terrorists are undeterred. This also reflects that the authorities are yet to ensure foolproof security cover for courts and judges. Luckily the driver of the judge and locals showed their courage to catch the terrorist. It is surprising to hear that the man came all the way from Barisal to Sylhet targeting the judge. Newspapers reported that the assailant in the hospital confessed to interrogating policemen that he is a follower of the JMB chief Shayekh Abdur Rahman and that two religious leaders gave him Taka 250,000 for killing the judge.
This is now the duty of the police and The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to track down the two religious leaders who gave him the money. The law courts and judges exist in every district and so they are soft targets for terrorists. Security must be further beefed up and intelligence service must be sharpened. Only catching the foot soldiers will not contain terrorism, its main strategists and planners must be booked.
General people are happy for banning the Harkatul Jihad. But this should have been done much earlier. It is now the responsibility of the government to de-activate the source and network of all Islamic outfits. If necessary the government should ban politics in the name of religion.
