Fish procurement from Kaptai Lake on rise
Our Correspondent

CHITTAGONG, Dec 3: As a result of some effective steps earlier including the release of locally raised fish-fries and creating safe abode for fish, the production of fish in Kaptai Lake has increased appreciably, sources said.
According to the statistics of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), a total of 791 tonnes of fish was extracted during the first 21 days of the season this year while it was only 532 tonnes the previous year.
BFDC Rangamati sources said that after meeting the demands of Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts, a huge quantity of fish of different species harvested from Kaptai Lake, around five to six thousand tonnes, are sent elsewhere. The BFDC makes millions annually and at the same time this also helps at least 5,000 families of the district to earn their livelihood.
Commenting on increased production of fish in the Kaptai Lake this year, a BFDC official said that earlier, fish fries were procured from other parts of the country. Those times they were not able to reap the benefits because much of the fries died for various reasons mostly during transportation. But with the locally produced fries, the death rate was negligible which led to the great jump in fish production.
