PABNA, Jan 31 (BDNEWS): Allegations of money embezzlement were raised against the officials of the Water Development Board (WDB) in Pabna in constructing three-kilometre long river protection dam. Sources said a section of unscrupulous officials along with some contractors and local influential political leaders embezzled about Tk 280 million in the name of constructing the dam in western side of the Jamuna River under the Meghna-Jamuna River Irrigation Mitigation Project. The aim of the project was to ensure the farming of some 1,84,000 acres of land under the irrigation and rural development project. The Asian Development Bank, Japan government and Bangladesh government jointly initiated the 11 km long embankment project at an estimated cost of Tk 2.50 billion. Local people alleged that although erosion of the dam stopped ahead of the dry season, some corrupt persons embezzled over Tk 280 million . Executive engineer of Bera water development board office Sharafat Ali, however, told news agency that there is no irregularity in constructing the dam.
