Electricity crisis causes sufferings to Rangpur subscribers
Our Correspondent
2/12/2006

RANGPUR, Feb 11: Ceaseless load-shedding, low voltage and fluctuation of electricity have been creating unbearable sufferings for all classes of subscribers in greater Rangpur for a long time.
Also jeopardised is the region's Irri-Boro cultivation in the current season, sources said. A large number of motors of the deep and shallow tubewells were damaged during last few days in the five northern districts, sources revealed.
The farmers are deeply concerned about the anarchic situation with regards to electric supply prevailing at both PDB and REB.
Around 8-10 hours of daily load-shedding with low voltage are frequently damaging valuable electrical appliances like TV, computer, refrigerator etc.
Almost every night power is disrupted, plunging the city in darkness and causing immense suffering to its residents. Businessmen, ailing people and students are the worst sufferers.
PDB's Rangpur zone Chief Engineer (distribution) said the minimum demand of electricity in the zone is about 200 mw, whereas they are forced to make do with only 70-90 mw. During the Boro season the demand doubles, which is further deteriorating the crisis, he added.
Lack of supply from the national grid and poor supply system are mainly responsible for the severe load-shedding in the northern region as well as other parts of the country, he also said.
Presently there are two 20-mw power-plants in Rangpur and Saidpur but both of them are out of operation due to diesel crisis in the districts, said sources.
An official apprehends that if the present power crisis continues, the situation will aggravate further.
