Leaks in national gas grid detected again
2/16/2006

Leaks were discovered again in the north-south pipeline of the national gas grid at Lebu Bagan near Muchai Manifold station at Habiganj and Moulvibazar border, reports BDNEWS.
One-third of the country's gas requirement -- about 460 mmcf per day -- is supplied through the 24-inch pipeline.
Sources said, the leaks in the pipeline were first noticed Monday by patrolmen. Later, local and central officials of the Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL) were informed.
While repairing the pipeline that took the entire day Tuesday amid secrecy, it was found that attempts had been made to create leaks at 23 places in the pipeline but the perpetrators had succeeded at only 3 spots.
The pipeline is at least a metre below the ground and some people had dug up the earth to damage it but who or why it could not be ascertained.
When contacted the central and field level officials of the GTCL declined to talk about the matter.
It may be mentioned the incident of gas pipeline leaks was first noticed near Moulvibazar gas field in March last year.
