President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed said Saturday in Dhaka that the private universities and the government institutions should redirect their efforts and means for integrating democratic options and opportunities in the strategy for strengthening the base of higher education and upgrading its system for a bright future of Bangladesh, report agencies. "This renewed vision must be unrelenting and strong in building private and public universities into centres of excellence," he said while addressing the fifth convocation ceremony of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB). The President said by providing quality education that is relevant to social needs of the country and also by opening wide the opportunities to all segments of society, Bangladesh can ensure a stable national and social order and, thus, its prosperity. Prof. Iajuddin Ahmed, who is also the Chancellor of the AIUB, observed that for the last few years, spectacular developments had taken place in the national economy through competition, attracting a sizeable amount of foreign investment and rapid expansion of its service sectors. "These sectors", he said, "have generated a great demand for quality business graduates with the cutting-edge skill. Education, as a result, is increasingly becoming a life-long activity and businesses are now looking for employees who are prepared to engage in learning on a continuous basis". Calling for redesigning the country's educational system to establish linkages between business and education at all levels, the President observed that this was how "a nation upgrades its position and maintains its superiority". He said the competitive nature of the global economy and the digital divide which "pose challenge for us" can be faced only by utilising properly the skilled human resources which come out of the education system to take up their vocations. "University education, which falls at the tertiary level, is important for every country as this sector is directly related to creation of knowledge, wealth and value of a nation," the President said. He said in Bangladesh, university education is still at a nascent stage as very few fortunate ones can get admission to such institutions and still fewer can finish their degrees. "This education has become costly." Appreciating the role of private universities, he said the setting up of such institutions has been a right move to keep the young talents within the country.
