Development of haor areas demanded to lift people from poverty
3/11/2006

The people of the disaster-prone haor areas of the country are always caught in the vicious cycle of poverty, reports BDNEWS.
Speakers said this at a human chain programme held in front of the Fine Arts Institute of the Dhaka University (DU) Friday jointly organised by the Save Environment Movement (SEM) and the Janaudyog demanding development of the haor areas and its proper maintenance.
Haor Development Board Director Enamul Haq, PEACE Secretary General Iqma Hossain, Abed Reza, Jesmin Ara Sultana and Abul Kalam Azad spoke at the programme with SEM convener Abu Naser Khan in the chair.
They said most of the jalmahals (water bodies) are now in the possession of the big shots under the banner of fishermen multiplying the sufferings of the commoners and fishermen.
They demanded the concerned authorities to take proper steps to develop the haor areas and its maintenance, said a SEM press release.
