Poultry business gaining ground in Manikganj
Our Correspondent
7/3/2006

MANIKGANJ, July 2: Poultry business is rapidly becoming popular all over the district. According to a source, about 1,000 poultry-farms of large and medium scale have been set up in seven upazilas of Manikganj.
A number of students, unemployed youths and other professionals recently got involved in the poultry business and are gradually emerging as successful entrepreneurs.
The poultry-farm owners of the district said, the cost of rearing a hybrid chicken is Tk 100 to 120, and later the hen lays 300 to 350 eggs a year. By selling those eggs the owner can easily earn a substantial amount of profit, many times higher than his initial investment. Besides, the average daily cost of poultry feed is only Tk one per hen, they added.
They said most of the poultry-owners were inspired by their neighbours who had achieved tremendous success and financial solvency after setting up their poultry-farms.
A large number of local residents, including housewives, were seen busy throughout the day in their farms, as poultry rearing has become a major source of income for them these days.
However, some entrepreneurs alleged that they had not been getting any loan facility from banks or government agencies. They feel that poultry business in the district would flourish, if the people connected with the industry receive due patronage, they added.
