Sub-standard drugs flood Narail markets
8/4/2006

NARAIL, Aug 03 (UNB): Sub-standard life saving drugs have flooded the markets of the district and are being sold with impunity, threatening public health.
Mosses, fungus and flies are often found in many liquid drugs, including saline and injections.
Intake of these contaminated drugs endangers the lives of patients in the district everyday, physicians said.
The mushroom growth of spurious drug companies is responsible for manufacturing of the sub-standard drugs.
These companies do not bother to obtain certificates from the concerned authorities for marketing their products.
A section of physicians particularly village doctors and quacks are seen patronising the sub-standard drugs for marketing.
Agents of some drug companies that market the sub-standard drugs allure physicians in rural areas to prescribe their products in exchange of money.
It is an open secret that the village doctors and quacks are seen prescribing such sub-standard medicines on getting attractive commission.
After taking handsome gifts or commission, the quacks in the villages prescribe these medicines, as these are available at cheaper prices at different local markets.
The poor and illiterate villagers use these sub-standard medicines without getting any result but they have no other alternative.
Most of the shops running without licences for long have been running their business freely with these sub-standard drugs in both urban and rural areas.
In the circumstances, the local elite said no drugs should be marketed without test certificates of the concerned authorities and drugs should inscribe on the bottle or ampoule the seal of the testing authorities or producers.
They demanded legal action against the manufacturers of these sub-standard medicines, adding that none should be allowed to trade on the lives of the common people.
