SAFTA does not provide for giving MFN status to India
1/23/2006

A Pakistani official has said the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) does not provide for giving the most favourite nation (MFN) status to India while Pakistan is not going to grant any preferential tariffs to New Delhi, reports BDNEWS.
"India is more aggressive in industrial trade with Pakistan than the agri side. However, the SAFTA would have clear impact on economies of all member states," Pakistan's Secretary for Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ismail Qureshi said addressing a seminar on "SAFTA: Impacts on Pakistan's Agrifood Sector" in Lahore Saturday.
The seminar was jointly organised by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Punjab Agri Marketing Company (PAMCO), according to an APP report.
The SAFTA is likely to be effective from July 1 this year, that is why cooperation between the government and the private sector is a must to effectively handle the implications of this vital agreement, he added.
Elaborating various aspects of SAFTA, the secretary said under the agreement the sensitive list would not be subject to tariff cut while the non-sensitive list would be negotiable.
