The country received Tk 94.0591 billion (9,405.91 crore) as remittances sent by non resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) during the first four months of the current fiscal (July to October 2005) as against Tk 67.31 billion of the corresponding period of last fiscal, registering a rise by Tk 26.75 billion or 39.74 per cent, reports BSS.
The inflow of remittances showed a gradual rise during the said four months, as it was Tk 24.588 billion in October, Tk 23.06 billion in September, Tk 24.46 billion in August and Tk 21.97 billion in July, according to Bangladesh Bank data.
The highest remittances sent during the period under review was from Saudi Arabia, to the tune of Tk 36.31 billion, followed by United States (US) amounting to Tk 16.43 billion and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the tune of Tk 10.37 billion.
The remittances sent from Kuwait during the four month period was Tk 9.34 billion, while it was Tk 8.08 billion from United Kingdom (UK), Tk 3.39 billion from Qatar, Tk 3.09 billion from Oman, Tk 2.52 billion from Bahrain and Tk 1.09 billion from Singapore, a central bank source said.
During the said period, a total of 87,523 workers were employed abroad, while it was 100,789 persons during the same period of last fiscal, showing a fall by 13,266 persons or 13.16 per cent.
A total of 21,153 workers were sent abroad in July 2005, while 22,704 workers were employed in August, 21,414 in September and 22,252 in October 2005. During the previous fiscal, 27,316 workers got jobs abroad in July, 23,938 in August, 21,899 in September and 27,636 in October during the year 2004.
During the fiscal year 2004-05, the inflow of remittances in the country amounted to Tk 236.47 billion, while it was Tk 198.70 billion in the fiscal 2003-04, Tk 177.29 billion in 2002-03 and Tk 143.77 billion in 2001-02.
A total of 251,881 workers were employed abroad during the fiscal 2004-05 while it was 272,693 in the fiscal (2003-04), 241,425 in fiscal (2002-03), and 185,534 in fiscal (2001- 02).
