Asia Energy Corporation (Bangladesh) Pty Ltd, the UK-based company planning to develop the Phulbari coalmine in Dinajpur, has been helping poor people cope with the recent cold weather by distributing blankets and warm clothes throughout the project area, reports BDNEWS. The company has already distributed 1,100 blankets to the people in Phulbari and is also handing out another 1,400 warm shawls, said a press release Sunday. "We will continue handing out warm clothes throughout the winter," said Badruzzaman, an Asia Energy geologist who is coordinating the humanitarian aid. "This has been a particularly cold January and some people without adequate shelter have suffered badly." As part of its welfare activities in the mine area, Asia Energy has also conducted a seasonal model agriculture project at Phulbari aiming to help farmers diversify their crops and achieve higher yields.
