Khaleda urges police to maintain peace, stability
1/6/2006

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia urged Thursday the police force to turn the country number-one in law and order by stamping all acts of terrorism, report agencies.
To that end, she directed the police high-ups to immediately arrest armed terrorists along with their top leaders through employing all their strength in conducting vigorous operation across the country.
"None should be spared," she said in her instructions given in a meeting with police officials ranking SP and above on the occasion of Police Week-2006 at the International Conference Centre at the PMO.
State Minister for Home Lutfuzzaman Babar, Home Secretary Saraf Raj Hossain and IGP M Abdul Quiyyum also spoke on the occasion.
At the same time, the Prime Minister urged the senior officials to do their job with honesty, sincerely and responsibly and keep watch so that "no corruption and irregularities" take place in the police department.
Describing her government's various pragmatic steps for enhancing police strength, professional skill and development and their welfare for ensuring public peace and security, Khaleda told the police senior officials that her government is providing necessary support to them. And they should repay this public debt through fulfilling people's aspiration of a peaceful and secure life.
In her strongly worded directive she said not only have they to arrest the criminals, charge sheet against them should be framed correctly so that none can get away through loophole of law.
She said people would have to be involves in the process of improving law and order and curbing "bomb terrorism", reminding that it was possible to wrest national independence within nine months as people were united. "Now people have united against bomb terrorism."
The Prime Minister, however, thanked the police for their effort in improving law-and-order situation and maintaining peace and discipline which has been manifest on various occasions and festivals.
Peace, discipline and stability are necessary for socioeconomic development, investment, employment and reducing poverty. As a result of maintaining these prerequisites, foreign investment is coming and massive development works are going on in all sectors, thereby generating employment and reducing poverty, she said.
Referring to some reports of recent deterioration in law and order in a couple of areas, the PM directed the concerned SP to be attentive towards curbing any crime.
She directed the Home Ministry to form women's thana in Dhaka Metropolitan area within one month and expedite the formation process of Sylhet and Barisal as Metropolises.
Responding to their demand, Prime Minister Khaleda said police officers would be brought under rationing, the government will support housing of police officials and expand Mirpur police barracks for further easing the accommodation of policemen.
Participation of the people is important, she said and mentioned it was possible to win the War of Independence in 1971 only in nine months because of the involvement of the people.
"We have fulfilled almost all of your requirements. We will do more for enhancing professional efficiency of the force and welfare of police personnel. But you have to meet, by hundred per cent, the demand of peace and security," she told the senior police officers.
