Erosion takes a serious turn in Jhalakathi
10/10/2005

JHALAKATHI, Oct 9 (UNB): Erosion by the rivers Sugandha and Bishkhali has taken a serious turn in different places of the district.
Some dwelling houses and 200 trees on one plot of land at Charkathi on the Sugandha-Bishkhali confluence and 70 feet of the Charkathi-Napterhat cross dam went into the river early Friday creating panic among the local inhabitants.
The Water Development Board constructed the cross dam at a cost of Tk 2.0 million (20 lakh) a year back.
Erosion started in the Charkathi and Charbatarakanda mouzas situated on the confluence of two rivers nearly two decades ago.
The rivers engulfed Charbatarakanda mouza completely and 70 per cent area of Charkathi so far rendering hundreds of people homeless.
Local people said no step has yet been taken to stop erosion in the district.
