The government Wednesday decided to involve the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in investigating
the alleged irregularities of Tk 2.08 billion (208 crore) through two projects taken during the last Awami
League government, reports UNB
A meeting of the Executive Committee on National Economic Committee (ECNEC), chaired by Finance
and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman, decided to send to the ACC the two projects titled "16-City
Electricity Supply Project 2nd phase (revised)" and "Mymensingh Town By-Pass Road Construction
Project (revised)" to probe the irregularities.
Sources in the Planning Commission informed that ECNEC on May 26, 1999 approved the 16-City
Electricity Supply Project 2nd phase (revised) costing Tk 2.25 billion (225.55 crore).
But already spending an additional Tk 1.98 billion over and above the approved Tk 2.25 billion, the project
authorities tabled the project with the ECNEC for allocating a total of Tk 4.96 billion with revision to
implement the scheme.
Later, the pre-ECNEC meeting on December 15, 2004 had formed a committee and asked for the report on
how the additional money has been allocated and used up without any prior approval.
Accordingly, the committee submitted a report and recommended administrative action against the
concerned Project and Bangladesh Power Development Board officials for spending Tk 1.98 billion more
than the approved project cost without approval of the authorities concerned.
Detailed discussion on the irregularities into the project took place at the ECNEC meeting Wednesday and
the meeting decided to refer it to the ACC to investigate into the misuse.
