Steps to protect the environment
10/19/2005

LAND, water and air are getting very seriously polluted in Bangladesh from all kinds of heavy polluting activities. Industries are polluting indiscriminately rivers and other water bodies, encroaches are blocking and narrowing even courses of rivers and fresh water sources are becoming increasingly hazardous from unchecked pollution. The level of air pollution in Dhaka city is still very high notwithstanding some useful steps recently to curb air pollution.
Bangladesh appears to be headed towards environmental disaster from such lack of concern about unabated polluting activities. There will, thus, be every reason for all governments in the country to act on environment issues with urgency. Specially, the present government was expected by all sections of people in the country to give the highest priority to environmental issues. It showed some signs of such an environmental consciousness and took some measures towards restoring the environment. But the steps are far short of need and leave a lot more desired.
Shireen Haque
Dhanmondi,
Dhaka.
