LETTER TO EDITOR

Government policies and business
10/19/2005

Higher economic growth and its fruits -- jobs and income for people -- is the direct outcome of a proper business environment existing in a country. The most important feature of such an environment is the confidence on the part of the members of the business community that they can rely on positive conditions that make up the external environment of their businesses. These conditions have many elements where the government has a significant role to play such as the government's fiscal and monetary policies that either encourage or discourage business, the sufficient duration of policies by the government which businesses can interpret as useful, existence of proper infrastructures and the government's promotion of such infrastructure building, et cetera.
The government in Bangladesh is expected to contribute much more in relation to each of these inputs and more to help the creation of a conducive business environment.
Ruhul Amin
Baridhara,
Dhaka.
