Over 200 Ctg markets under fire-risk
Our Correspondent

CHITTAGONG, Oct 25: Over 200 markets, located at the different parts of the port-city are under risk of fire. The power transmission system of those markets is in such a deplorable condition that it may lead to dreadful accidents anytime, said sources.
It is also quite impossible for the fire brigade's vehicles to enter into some markets in case of fire. The shops are so close to each other that fire would spread very quickly before it can be extinguished. Moreover, there is hardly any arrangement for adequate water supply.
All these mismanagements have been persisting in those markets of the port city for long, but no effective step has yet been taken to redress matters, the sources added.
As many as 22 shops were completely destroyed following a fire incident at old Reazuddin Bazar recently, causing a damage of over Tk 20 million.
Visiting some old markets in the city, extreme mismanagement in power transmission was observed.
As there is no arrangement in those markets to control the power supply centrally, it enhances the risk of fire accidents, the sources apprehend.
