LONDON, Dec 27 (AFP): Record numbers of British children were treated in hospital last year with alcohol-related problems, The Daily Telegraph said Tuesday. Some 4,809 children were admitted to accident and emergency units for the effects of drinking alcohol in 2004-05, a rise of 15 per cent since Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labour party came to power in 1997. The illnesses included cirrhosis, mental behaviour disorders and the toxic effects of drinking when young, the newspaper said. The Department of Health figures also showed a rise in the number of adults admitted to hospital for drink-related conditions, up 30 per cent from 35,740 in 1996-97 to 46,299 in 2004-05.
