MARKET & COMMODITIES

tea market
Large offerings lead to lower price
FE Report
12/29/2005

There was a large offering in the week which met with a fair interest at the beginning but as the sale progressed demand weakened. As a result, prices declined by a fair margin and also suffered very heavy withdrawals particularly in the Medium and plainer categories.
There was fair interest from Blenders/Packeteers. Loose tea buyers operated less actively. Pakistan buyers were also rather selective whilst there was some buying on account of CIS. Dusts were a much easier market.
CTC LEAF: 27,480 bags, and 1,129 c/s, on offer met with a progressively less demand with heavy withdrawals at the close.
BROKENS: A few well made good liquoring Brokens met with a fairly good enquiry and sold well but were easier by Tk.2.00 to Tk.3.00. These could be quoted between Tk.78 and Tk.81.50. The remainder met with less demand and where sold declined by Tk.2.00 to Tk.4.00 and there were heavy withdrawals in this category. Similarly, plain teas were also much easier with heavy withdrawals. A few large types met with a fair demand but mostly at easier rates.
FANNINGS: A handful of black, well made Fannings were strongly competed for and were generally firm and sold between Tk.81.50 and Tk.85.50. Below best met with a fairly good interest at the beginning but were neglected towards the close and these could be quoted between Tk.77 and Tk.80. Medium and Plainer types were also easier by a similar margin but there were heavy withdrawals amongst these varieties.
CTC DUST: 3,600 bags, and 155 c/s, offer met with much less demand at easier rates with heavy withdrawals. A handful of good liquoring RDs/Ds sold fairly well but eased by Tk.2.00 to Tk.3.00 whilst their PDs were neglected. CDs were again a lower market with very heavy withdrawals and where sold eased by Tk.5.00 to Tk.10.00 over last. Both Blenders and Loose tea buyers continued to be selective.
