Moudud for broad-based consensus before approval of ICC Charter
2/13/2005

Steps should be taken to reach a political consensus before ratification of the charter on the international criminal court (ICC).
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed made the observation while speaking as the chief guest at the regional conference on "ICC: Its publicity, potentials and barriers" at BRAC centre in the city Saturday.
"Bangladesh is respectful to international laws, and it always tries to play an active role in different forums of the world. As part of it Bangladesh has become the pioneering signatory country to the ICC," he mentioned.
Representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh committed against war crimes anywhere in the world are taking part in the conference, coorganised by the Odhikar and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court.
Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh David Sproule, ICC Judge in Rawanda Justice TH Khan and Convener of the Asian Network for International Court Ahmed Ziauddin spoke on the occasion.
President of Odhikar Tasnim Siddiqui presided over the conference.
The minister also said that a mass awareness should be crated in the country for ratifying the ICC charter.
