Garment workers observe half-day strike March 2
FE Report
2/28/2006

Garments workers will observe a half-day strike March 2 in protest against what they said the failure of the government and factory owners to take adequate safety and security measures for workers.
Leaders of 16 garment works organisations announced the strike programme at a joint press conference at Mukti Bhaban at Purana Paltan Monday. Amirul Huq Amin, Sahidullah Chowdhury, Salauddin Swapan and Towhidur Rahman attended it.
They blasted the government and factory owners for the fire incidents in garment factories and said that no measures were taken to save the lives of garment workers despite repeated demand.
Some 55 garment workers were killed in fire at KTS garments in Chittagong, they said adding that over 20 others were killed in Phoenix building collapse Saturday.
