HR situation 'better in Bangladesh than many states’
3/10/2006

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed claimed Thursday that human rights and corruption situation in Bangladesh is better than that of many countries of the world, reports UNB.
"I won't say we don't have human rights problem, but I must say the situation is better here than in many countries of the world," he told reporters giving his reaction on the US State Department report on human rights 2005.
The US report released in Washington on Wednesday said human rights record in Bangladesh is very "poor" and the government continued to commit numerous abuses.
Terming the report as a routine affair of the US administration that recorded human rights situation in 196 countries, Moudud said, "I think the information on which the report is prepared ought to be examined and we have to take note of it."
He said the problems of human rights and corruption are more or less prevalent in all developing and developed countries including the United States.
On political detention under the Special Powers Act, he said no political leader or worker is detained under this law. Only 100 to 150 people have been detained under it, but not for political reason.
