CNG scam: JS bodies yet to submit reports
3/6/2005

Despite repeated reminders, two sub-committees, formed to investigate into alleged corruption in CNG sector, did not submit their reports.
The parliamentary standing committee on communications ministry that held its first meeting in last four and half months Saturday gave fresh deadline of March 29 for submission of the reports, says BDNEWS.
"Otherwise, new sub-committees will be formed," warned the parliamentary watchdog.
Heads of both the sub-committees did not attend the Saturday's meeting.
Standing committee members from opposition Awami League -- Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Mustafizur Rahman -- attended the meeting for the first time.
Of the two sub-committees, one was formed on January 7 last year to investigate into alleged corruption in importing CNG three-wheelers as well issuance of route permits for the four-stroke autos.
It was asked to complete investigation in one month. The deadline, however, was deferred thrice.
Nadim Mostafa of ruling BNP heads the committee.
On the other hand, Mahmudul Haq Rubel, also of BNP, heads the sub-committee formed to investigate into alleged corruption in allotment of lands of Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Railway for setting up CNG refuelling stations.
The committee was formed on February 14, 2004 and the deadline to submit its report expired on May 30 last year.
Sheikh Selim alleged that corruption of several hundred crore taka took place in allocating the government lands.
Committee chairman Syed Manzur Hossain would not specify, but said land of railway worth several thousand crore taka have been grabbed in different parts of the country.
As Selim asked why the committee did not sit in meeting in last five months, Manzur Hossain said they wanted presence of minister and secretary. "Also I was not physically well," he told the meeting.
