WASHINGTON, Mar 31 (BSS): The World Bank Institute in its just released annual report for 2004 commended Bangladesh as a confirmed focus country of the institution with an increase of its activities. The report used a box with a quote from Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's address at a World Bank-sponsored conference in Shanghai, China along with her photograph. The annual report of the WBI release just before the on-going Economically and Environmentally Sustainable Development Week at World Bank headquarters here under the sub-title of 'Multiyear programme leverage WBI's presence in Bangladesh, Mexico, Brazil and India' mentioned policy analysis, health finance and parliamentary oversight in Bangladesh. The report said WBI has worked closely with the World Bank's team in Bangladesh to identify sectors in which comparative advantage will have a clear impact while complementing the Bank's broader work programme in the country. The first task to emerge, the report said, was upgrading the capacity for policy analysis of the country's central bank and the World Bank Institute team helped the Bangladesh Bank establish a new policy analysis group with new product lines and a new human resource management framework. The report pointed out that it also created an external network of support for policy analysis that includes the Bank of Korea, the Korean Development Institute, the US Federal Reserve Board, the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada and the University of Singapore. In a third programme, WBI will work with international organisations such as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Canadian Parliamentary Centre to strengthen committee work within Bangladesh Parliament, the report said adding similar programs are being developed for Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
