The price indices on the country's two bourses went up last week while turnover dropped in moderately active market. The banking sector sustained its position as trade turnover leader. The General Price Index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE)), compiled on the basis of average prices, increased by 2.13 per cent or 34.85 points to close at 1670.99 points from the previous week's 1636.13. The week's total turnover, in terms of value , on the DSE stood at Tk 797.57 million following transactions of 6.89 million shares and debentures that registered 7.61 per cent rise over that of the previous week's Tk 863.26 million against 7.65 million shares. The total market capitalisation at DSE, however, increased by 2.09 per cent to close at Tk 215.12 billion from Tk 210.72 billion. As on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the All Share Price Index moved up 61.50 points or 1.85 per cent to close at 3377.18 points from 3315.68 points of the previous week. The turnover slipped by 18.37 per cent following transactions of 3.11 million shares worth Tk 199.38 million against previous week's transactions of 4.60 million shares worth Tk 244.24 million. The CSE total market capitalisation rose by 1.77 per cent to close at Tk 216.43 billion from Tk 212.65 billion. The market remained moderately active, as 210 out of 265 listed securities were traded on the DSE during the week, including 84 gainers, 116 losers and ten remaining unchanged. On the CSE, 107 out of the 209 listed issues were active. Of them, 45 gained, 59 declined and three remained steady. The banking sector shares contributed more than 64 per cent to the trade turnover on the DSE in the week, while it accounted for about 63 per cent of the week's trade turnover on the CSE. In trading, Bangladesh Dyeing performed as the top gainer on the DSE, registering 40.68 per cent gain. Bengal Biscuit was the top losing issue with its price being diminished by 14.87 per cent over the week. Apex Weaving appeared as the top gaining issue on the CSE, posting 23.93 per cent rise in price. On the other hand, Usmania Glass was the top loser of the week on the CSE, as its price dropped by 27.18 per cent.
