Ministry withholds tender process of NMCT
FE Report
3/11/2006

The shipping ministry Friday withheld the tender process of New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT) in the wake of widespread protest by port general workers.
However, the ministry hinted that Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will resume the process after making required changes soon.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at Chittagong Port Friday. Shipping Secretary Md Rafiqul Islam, Chairman of the CPA AMM Shahadat Hossain, General Secretary of Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) of the CPA Nurullah Bahar, Shamsul Hoque Shafi and Kazi Jahangir attended the meeting.
The CPA called an international tender for privatisation of NMCT's management and equipment operation on January 30 and set April 30 as the last date for submission of the tender.
There are three separate alliances protesting the process of handing over the operation and management of the NMCT to private hands.
Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury is leading Bandar Rakkha Committee (BRC) comprising 10 different front organisations while Bandar Sramik Union is leading another alliance having seven organisations. Besides, another alliance is being led by front organisations of ruling BNP and its other allied political forces.
