RAJSHAHI, March 12 (BSS): Speakers at a scientific discussion on gynecological training here last night said both the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) could be reduced to a significant extent through safe delivery. They observed that to make delivery safe the traditional birth attendants particularly in the rural areas must be brought under gynecological training. Islami Bank Medical College Hospital (IBMCH) arranged the discussion at its Conference Hall on the occasion of the distribution of certificates among the successful participants of a month-long training course on gynecology. Chairman of Islami Bank Foundation (IFB) Shah Abdul Hannan attended the closing discussion as the chief guest with superintendent of IBMCH Muhammad Jahangir in the chair. Assistant Professor of Pediatrics of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Ali Naoroz, IBMCH Administrative Officer ASM Mamun Shaheen and IFB coordinator Aftabur Rahman also spoke on the Occasion. The meeting was informed that 87 per cent of the deliveries were being done by the traditional untrained birth attendants while only 13 per cent were performed by trained attendants in the country. The meeting was told that to bring an effective change in the situation, IBMCH has launched the training course and successful participants would play a vital role in ensuring safe delivery in the remote areas. The participants were given necessary instruments and kit boxes used for delivery purposes.
