SBC staff to get free lunch putting pressure on govt purse
FE Report
3/15/2006

State-owned Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC) is going to introduce lunch allowance for its employees with a cost of Tk 5.14 million annually.
"It is amazing that a government office has taken a move to deplete such a huge amount of money from the state coffer in the name of lunch offering," a source in the SBC told the FE Tuesday.
A departmental meeting of the SBC is scheduled to approve the allowance today (Wednesday).
The source said that the SBC is going to sanction Tk 30 per staff as lunch allowance.
There are some 1200 staff in the SBC, an organisation often alleged to be plagued by corruption like many other government offices.
"A total of Tk 3.5 million has already been allocated in the budget of the 2005-06 fiscal as tea bill for the SBC staff," the source mentioned.
Currently, each SBC staff gets Tk 8.0 as daily tea bill and if the lunch allowance is approved, the tea bill will not be disbursed.
Sources further alleged that the SBC did not collect any data from the entities under the commerce ministry where such privileges are offered to the staff.
"Rather, the commerce ministry followed the examples of finance ministry and industries ministry which is not desirable at all," the source added.
