Evicted slum dwellers living under open sky
3/17/2006

Despite the stay order by the court, the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) with support from the police force evicted Thursday the Dhalpur Adarsha Bosti, known as slum, under Demra thana, reports BDNEWS.
During the eviction drive, the police aided by local cadres charged batons indiscriminately on the slum dwellers, leaving at least 50 people injured.
As a result of eviction, hundreds of slum dwellers have been staying under the open sky since they were made homeless. A tense situation was also prevailing there.
According to eye-witnesses, the DCC and its magistrates evicted the slum dwellers with the help of four platoons of police from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Witnesses said the DCC officials and the police demolished at least 700 shanties with the help of bulldozers and left over 10,000 people under the open sky.
The homeless slum dwellers alleged the DCC officials evicted them violating an order from the Sub-Judge's court in the capital. The injunction was issued four months back.
They alleged that when they tried to produce the injunction order and drew the attention of the officials, the police and the cadres swooped on them and beat them mercilessly.
Many of them alleged that the DCC conducted the eviction drive without any notice.
When contacted, Sub-Inspector (SI) Taiyeb of Demra thana said the DCC did not inform them of the eviction move and even did not seek the police from them.
