BARI evolves new variety of onion
3/17/2006

GAZIPUR, Mar 16 (UNB): Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) has innovated a new high yielding variety of onion seeds suitable for cultivation all the year round.
BARI is expecting to export onion to foreign countries after meeting the local demand by cultivating the onion on a massive scale.
Official sources said scientific officer M Mohabbatullah evolved the new variety 'BARI onion and F-5' after working on summer onion.
Earlier, the oganisation evolved four varieties of hybrid onions.
According to the scientists, farmers could make a net profit of Tk 20,000 - 35,000 in three months from each bigha of land.
The country produces only 1.50 lakh tons onion from 35,000 hectares against the annual demand of 5.60 lakh tons.
BARI hoped the target could be achieved by cultivating the variety throughout the year.
