Japan keen to import medicines from Bangladesh
FE Report
9/12/2005

Japan showed keen interest to import medicines from Bangladesh due to the good quality of the pharmaceutical products.
Koji Nojima, chairman of Japan-Bangladesh Committee for Commercial and Economic Cooperation (JBCCEC), expressed the keen interest at a meeting between Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) and a high-powered delegation from Japan at a city hotel Friday.
Koji Nojima, who led the delegation, also expressed his high satisfaction over the quality of the pharmaceutical products of Bangladesh.
He mentioned that after going back to Japan, he would send a technical team to visit the pharmaceutical manufacturing sites and factories here.
He also said, apart from export, there also exist other opportunities including 'under-licence manufacturing' of Japanese pharmaceutical products in Bangladesh and 'joint ventures' between the pharmaceutical industries of Japan and Bangladesh.
BAPI President SM Shafiuzzaman and Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of Beximco Pharma Nazmul Hassan represented the Bangladesh pharmaceutical industry.
Nazmul Hassan made a presentation on various achievements of the pharmaceutical industry including manufacturing capability of life saving quality medicines.
Hassan informed, the pharmaceutical industry is heading towards self-sufficiency meeting the local demand and now is already exporting its quality medicines to many countries across the world.
The Japanese delegation also comprised Hideo Ueno, general manager and representative of ITOCHU Corporation.
BAPI said if Bangladesh can export its medicines to Japan, the second largest pharmaceutical market of the world, the country will be able to earn Tk 10.0 billion (1,000 crore) to Tk 20.0 billion only from pharmaceutical exports.
